Madras is losing its land in the medical zone

The medical overlay zone was created in 2002 to preserve an area around the hospital for medical purposes. Just recently the city council has decided to allow a large apartment complex to be built right across the hospital on Oak street in that medical zone. That land is supposed to be future development of medically-related businesses like new cancer center in Redmond.

This apartment complex would be adjacent to single family homes in subdivisions to the North and East. Residents challenging this decisions because of their concern that they would lose their privacy and livability if this were built.

Because apartments are allowed in any zone, this this type of high density project could be built in any neighborhood in Madras.

Bend Oregon ran out of space in their medical zone because they made this same mistake.
